A series of events celebrating Chicago Green Transit options including a bike safety and maintenance workshop, green-focused bike tour through Humboldt Park and Logan Square, and presentations supporting active transportation options, urban bike culture, and healthy streets initiatives.

This day-long project dedicated to biking and green transportation alternatives will actually be two events staged consecutively so that so that participants can choose between one, or both the events. These events are:

1- Warm Up Your Bike For Spring
(A Bicycle Readiness Workshop) 10:00-11:30am

Partnering with the Safe Routes Ambassadors, Chicagoland Bicycle Amabassadors and Active Transportation Alliance and Ciclo Urbano/West Town Bikes, these 30-minute repeating workshops will assist participants with “bringing their bikes out of the storage closet” that is, maintenance and preparation of their bikes for the Spring riding season. It will include bicycle safety rules of the road lessons, a “fix-a-flat, oil your chain, adjust your bike seat, tighten your brakes, true your wheel and more” workshop with tools and assistance provided from experienced bike mechanics and riders, with free bike-safety publications presented by the City of Chicago and some give away prizes (inner tube patch kits, water bottles and more).

This event will be held in the large outdoor plaza at the Humboldt Park Boat House.
Possibly include a kid-focused bike maze and obstacle course chalked onto the parking lot in front of the Boat House.

2- Guided Bike Tour of Neighborhoods’ Green Initiatives
(Sustainable Projects & Institutions in Logan Square and Humboldt Park) 11:30-3:00pm

A bicycle tour of these adjacent neighborhoods will focus on models of sustainable urban planning, greenspace use, healthy transportation alternatives and bicycle-culture advocacy. This will include discussing the history of the “Emerald Necklace” of Boulevards and our linked parks as a model of multi-use green spaces. It will discuss the city of Chicago’s bike lane systems and the proposal for the Bloomingdale Trail on the elevated 3 mile byway and examine the protected wildlife lagoons and solar/wind turbine installation in Humboldt Park. The tour will also feature tour stops and presentations with reps from local community gardens like the Corner Farm (Altgeld & Sawyer Streets) and the Campbell/Hirsh Co-Op Garden as well as stops at community based green-transportation institutions like Ciclo Urbano and the Center for Neighborhood Technology (and its i-Go car sharing program).

This tour will stop at a variety of points of interest to the sustainable community including these possible featured tour sites (note: these sites are subject to change and not all confirmed yet):

  • Tour these neighborhoods: Humboldt Park, Palmer Square, Logan Square
  • Humboldt Park Lagoons & Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Ciclo Urbano Bike Workshop
  • Center for Neighborhood Technology
  • The Green Depot
  • Neighbor Space (Campbell Garden)
  • Bloomingdale Trail Park
  • Altgeld & Sawyer Corner Farm
  • Paseo Boricua Flag Arches
  • Palmer Square Park
  • Logan Square Farmers Market

3- Socializing “After-Party” at CCGT 3:00-4:00pm

At trip’s end hang out with your tour-mates and explore the LEED Platinum Certified Chicago Center for Green Technology and socialize in their backyard rain garden. Tour the Solar Decathalon House and CCGT’s grounds and interior for examples of Green Architecture, Landscaping and sustainable retrofitting of a site that had been a hazardous brownfield.

(Note: Tentative featured sites will be developed in coordinating meetings in April.)
